While you are saving, the order of your investment returns barely matters; only the destination counts. But once you retire and start withdrawing, the order suddenly matters enormously. Two people with identical average returns over retirement can finish rich or broke depending purely on whether the bad years came early or late. This is sequence-of-returns risk, and it is one of the least discussed dangers in retirement.

Why order matters when you withdraw

The danger is selling investments for income during a downturn early in retirement. It is also counterintuitive in a specific way: the risk is not that returns will be poor on average, which people do worry about, but that adequate average returns will arrive in an unfavourable order. The practical takeaway is narrow and worth carrying: during accumulation, volatility is not your enemy and may be an advantage. During the transition and early withdrawal years, it is the primary threat, and the defences against it have to be in place before the window opens rather than constructed inside it.

Testing a plan against bad orderings

Rather than relying on a single projection, the informative exercise is to test the plan against the worst historical sequences rather than the average one.
